The Miseries of War is Callot’s most famous series and a monument in the history of printmaking. Remarkable enough in narrative invention and technical accomplishment, it is a fundamental example of current events as the subject of high art, a timeless representation of the course of human aggression, and an inspiration for every later approach to the subject, from Goya to Picasso
