This etching celebrates Della Bella’s continued relationship with the Medici during his long period in Rome (1633-39). Among Della Bella’s assignments was the artistic education of young Cosimo III de’ Medici. Here he is shown drawing the so-called Medici Vase, a monumental marble krater of the late first century A.D. that stood in the garden of the family’s villa in Rome.
