On View
Not on viewMarcenay was a well-to-do amateur whose etchings, according to Beraldi, "possess an intelligence and an originality that makes them immediately recognizable and way more than the work of an amateur." The portraits, he adds, "are by far his best prints." This self-portrait is one of the earliest and rarest. Responding to Marcenay’s unconventional talent and sensitivity, Steinberg acquired eight other etchings.
