On View
Not on viewThe passion of Phrosine and Mélidore was described by Gentil Bernard (1710-75), a minor poet during the reign of Louis XV. Prud'hon's engraving illustrates the climactic moment in which the lovers, after being separated by the jealousy of Phrosine's brother and Mélidore's heartbroken retreat to an island, are reunited when she swims to him and collapses in his embrace.
