Hans Bellmer’s work focused on the distorted female form as an exploration of his own forbidden desires. In the 1930s, Bellmer produced the first of his Dolls, life-sized female dummies assembled from disparate parts, which he manipulated and photographed in various poses. In Les Marionettes, Bellmer pieces together unassociated anatomical elements into fantastical new forms, with recognizable ball joints and hinges of the dolls that inspired these works.
