Fold Back is a humorous twist on the conventional artist's sketch. Motivated by a spirit of generosity and camaraderie, this print is essentially a "kit" for the construction of one of César Paternosto's paintings. Were the viewer to actaually take the artist up on his offer, they would find themselves in the midst of an interactive (not to mention collaborative) endeavor. The result would be something that vaguely resembles the painting by Paternosto that is in the Blanton's collection--Pintura abstracta [Abstract Painting]: Rust, Gold, Black (1974)--in which most of the compositional motifs are confined to the sides of three rather thick canvases.
