The Rupestrian Sculptures Series records a group of wall carvings Mendieta made in remote caves during her first trip back to her homeland. Mendieta’s simple but vital images depict goddess-figures from the mythology of the Taínos, the native inhabitants of the island. An essential theme in all of her work is the relationship between the female body and the earth, both timeless sources of life.
