The Guiot catalogue notes: "Several impressions are noted as 1st state, but there is only one state as the artist abandoned the idea of altering the plate." Heintzelman told a friend that the scene was a group of artists, poets, and painters at the café "Le Lapin Agile" in Montmartre who frequently met for congenial evenings and read, played instruments, or showed their latest works. Heintzelman himself is the seated figure who is bending over the table. The standing woman is Kiki, a model who was then well-known in artistic circles in Paris and one of the subjects in Heintzelman's print "Planche aux Cinq Croquis". The figure to her right is Fredie, who was the subjects of "Fredie du Café Le Lapin Agile" and "Le Poete". He was regarded by Heintzelman as the last of the great Montmartre singers. The young man with the guitar is Fredie's son. Smith 114
