Benjamin Muñoz
Corpus Christi, Texas, 1994 – Dallas, Texas, present
Benjamin Muñoz is primarily a printmaker and a painter. He studied art at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, and later taught at the Creative Art Center in Dallas. Muñoz tends to favor large-scale woodcuts that are organized in vertical or totem-like compositions. Among his best-known works are his print series "The Endless Endeavour" (2018-19) and "Familia" (2019-20), which address the history of his family, from the immigration of his paternal grandfather from Mexico, who crossed the border in the 1930s and later became a successful architect and business man, to the birth of the artist’s two daughters. Muñoz has maintained a strong community engagement by co-founding the Familia Printshop, Dallas’s first community printshop, and the Latino printmaking collective Siete, created to show pride in Latino history and culture. Muñoz has also published his work with Flatbed Center for Contemporary Printmaking and Coronado Print Studio. Since 2018, Muñoz has had several solo exhibitions in Texas, in Corpus Christi, Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, and San Antonio; and elsewhere in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Flint, Michigan. His work is in several private and public collections in the United States, including the Mexic-Arte Museum in Austin, and the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago.
