Judith Bernstein

Judith Bernstein was born in 1942 in Newark, New Jersey. Her prolific career spans over five decades, and she continues to develop a visual language that is grounded in social critique and provocative feminist assertions. Bernstein first gained recognition in the 1970s for her penis-screw hybrid drawings, an iconic motif for which she has become well-known, as well as her evolving explorations of graffiti, text, and expressive line work. She was an early participant in many activist organizations including the Guerrilla Girls and the Art Workers’ Coalition. Bernstein currently lives and works out of New York, New York.
