Jack Levine (1915–2010) was an American painter and printmaker known for social realism and his satirical commentary on modern life rooted in the style of German expressionism. Levine is considered one of the key figures in the Boston Expressionist movement. Early in his career, Levine worked intermittently for the WPA’s Federal Art Project from 1935 to 1939. In 1936, two of his WPA paintings were selected for a group exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Later in 1937, Levine gained widespread recognition for his painting The Feast of Pure Reason, which is now housed in the Museum of Modern Art.
