On View
Not on viewAdmirer and collector of the arts, Tassis was appointed the Canon at the Cathedral of Antwerp after losing his left arm in battle. In Neeffs’s reproduction of Van Dyck’s painting, however, it appears that his right arm is missing as his left holds a book. This is the nature of reproductive printmaking. The engraver transfers to the plate exactly what he sees in the painting; making the final print a mirror image.
