David Garrick was the greatest stage actor of his time. Images of him in costume and scene enjoyed tremendous success. The most famous painted representation (today in the Tate Gallery, London), Reynolds’s allegorical portrait parodies the mythological subject of Hercules facing the choice between virtue and pleasure. The numerous copies of Fisher’s mezzotint underscore its popularity.
