Rómulo Macció continues to explore the theme of existential duality in his 1965 work Por dentro y por fuera [Inside and Outside]. Here Macció juxtaposes a large indigenous visage against a monochromatic figure. The face emerging from the central portion is rendered three-dimensional through modulation in tonality. The solid presence is emphatically stressed by the arrow which functions as a nose for the mask. This in turn contrasts with the flat rendering of the surface and the agressive pallette of the composition. Here again Macció seems to suggest dualism in his view of reality, a prominent concern with the New Figuration group.
