Miguel Angel Vidal favored abstraction early in his artistic career, co-founding the Arte Generativo [Generative Art] group in 1959 with his compatriot Eduardo McEntyre. Both artists took Concrete art’s focus on abstract forms as a point of departure, but updated this approach as they became interested in optical perception as well as in scientific advancements. Vidal affirmed, “The revolutionary realities of science, research in cybernetics, bioengineering, [and] astronautics… awaken in me a series of questions that incite me to the great creative adventure.” Their objective was to “generate” visual compositions by using basic structural elements like line and color in logical, methodical ways. For Vidal, the straight line became the key element to build his paintings, exploring a series of systematic repetitions, rotations, and slants. Here, he creates a dense network of lines in gem-like colors that transcends the flatness of the surface, suggesting infinite depth and virtual movement.
