This is a compositional study for an altarpiece in the church of Saint Nicholas, now the cathedral, in Böhmisch Budweis, Germany. The altarpiece, executed in 1770-71, differs considerably in the secondary figures and detail. While the drawing retains the amplitude and the luminosity that are characteristic of Maulbertsch’s mature activity, the calmer order of the composition and the relatively simplified poses of the figures suggest an incipient classicism.
