Pupil of Troger and later director of the Vienna academy, Sambach worked throughout Austria, Hungary and Moravia. In 1757 he received payment for an altarpiece of the Assumption of the Virgin for the Church of the Virgin in Buda, Hungary. Given its fully developed composition and careful finish, this drawing may have been a model submitted to a patron or, considering its autograph date, a record for the artist.
