This is a fine study of Paggi’s maturity, quite automatic but less extravagant in line, with more carefully applied and gradated washes, relative to the style of Cambiaso. Although no corresponding painting has been identified, the auto-graph inscription describes the drawing as preparatory for “an altarpiece in [the patron’s] chapel in Randazzo, Sicily.”
