Paggi’s style was determined by Cambiaso, his first teacher, but given a more academic orientation and regular appearance during a twenty-year sojourn in Florence. Returning to Genoa in 1599, he was briefly the city’s most important painter and a leading teacher of the next generation. Long thought Cambiaso’s, this drawing has recently been recognized by Mary Newcome as an early work of Paggi.
