The painting is one of the three mythologies that Titian contributed to the decoration of the studio of Duke Alfonso d’Este at Ferrara between 1518 and 1523. In 1598 the paintings passed to the Aldobrandini family in Rome, where Podestà etched this interpretation. In 1639 two of the three were offered to Philip IV of Spain, where they remain in the Prado.
