Photorealists are interested more in the way photography structures vision than in the institution of media as subject matter. They adopt familiar images precisely for their banality, but tend to emphasize the beauty, rather than the offensiveness, of such imagery - to celebrate the uniqueness of the commonplace. Franz Gertsch utilizes the instantaneous effect of photography, the scale of a cinematic close-up, and the arbitrariness of a film still to explore the visual properties of film rather than its subject matter.
