Altdorfer’s series consists of forty blocks rendering the fundamental Christian narrative, from Original Sin through the Last Judgment, with most devoted to the Life of Christ. Distinctively, they bring the miniature scale, pictorial values, and technical refinement of some of Dürer’s engravings to woodcut. The Steinberg Collection includes three other prints from the series, and the later engraving of Hercules and a Muse.
