A complex religious figure, "la Virgen" is a traditional female role model that embodies both purity and motherhood. She is simultaneously revered and reimagined by artists to fit contemporary notions of gender. Cristina Cárdenas maintains a relatively conventional depiction in "La Virgen de los Pescados", emphasizing the Virgin’s gold jewelry to match metallic highlights on her halo and the fish.
