A complex religious figure, "la Virgen" is a traditional female role model that embodies both purity and motherhood. She is simultaneously revered and reimagined by artists to fit contemporary notions of gender. In "Mi Amor", Paul Martínez presents a young pregnant woman as Mary. Instead of her cape-like mantle, this Virgin is covered with a Mickey Mouse printed sheet in a scene with vibrant colors and photographic imagery of cherubs and roses.
