Oddi’s etching is based upon a drawing at Frankfurt, which had already been interpreted in a chiaroscuro woodcut by Niccolò Vicentino. The print is not only extremely rare but unusual in kind: most Italian artists of the seventeenth century were concerned with applying and extending the principles, rather than reproducing the appearance, of Parmigianino’s graphic works.
