Not on viewThis engraving of Champaigne's painting in the Louvre is a masterpiece of the genre. Early in Edelinck's development, it retains the balance, clarity, and sincerity that distinguish the work of his master, Nanteuil, the father of French portrait engraving. At the same time, it incorporates a more varied tone and a more textured light that echo Rubens's school. Even the finest portrait engravings have stirred little modern interest. Steinberg acquired many prime examples for their complex language, virtuoso technique, and especially in renderings of fellow artists, remarkable empathy.
