León Ferrari’s artistic practice often examined the overlap between drawing and writing. His work was also shaped by his opposition to authoritarianism, becoming critical of the military who ruled Argentina from the 1960s until the mid 1980s. In 1963, Ferrari produced a series of drawings called "Letters to a General," in which he dissolved calligraphic writing into barely legible symbols. The unintelligibility of the language presented in this untitled drawing suggests a breakdown of communication between those in power and the people. It raises unsettling questions about the message being conveyed, which perhaps can no longer be put into words, or about the imaginary writer, whose state of mind may mirror the degradation of the script.
