Label Text
The scene depicted was probably in Maine. Digging Clams was published in 1931 by the Chicago Society of Etchers as their 22nd presentation print, for distribution to the society's associate members. The print was issued in a heavy, dark green paper folder with a gold seal bearing the logo of the society (an etching press and the society's name). The sheet size of the edition is aprox. 11 1/2 x 15 7/8 (293 x 403 mm). Text describing the artist and the etching accompanied the print on a separate sheet. The edition was printed to the size of the membership, which numbered aprox. 350 in 1931. Eby printed the trial proofs of Digging Clams but not the edition, so those impressions are not inscribed "imp." after Eby's signature. The plate was destroyed after the edition was printed.
