Vasari states that Titian himself drew the design for this woodcut upon the block. The composition is a variation upon the lower half of the altarpiece Titian executed for the church of San Nicolò dei Frari, Venice, between circa 1520 and the early 1530s. The painting is today in the Vatican Museums.
