María Luisa Pacheco arrived in New York in the late 1950s, at a time of emerging interest in Latin American art. She settled in the city where she produced abstract paintings whose earthy colors and rugged textures suggest the mountainous Andean landscape where she grew up. Pacheco often builds the rich surface of her painting with thick layers of oil paint applied with a knife or a trowel, and with found objects. In this case, she deftly integrated wood splinters into the staccato rhythm of her work.
