Drawing played a conspicuous role in Veronese’s production. Detailed studies not only prepared his paintings but recorded their compositions and motifs for re-use in his workshop. This sheet is characteristic of the master in its pictorial use of chalk and the type of the Virgin. The cautious handling and superficial expression, however, betray its derivation from another work and the hand of an assistant.
