With its deep space, semicircular organization, and balletic figures, this composition seems contemporary with the Palazzo Grimaldi’s Return of Ulysses. From the large number of surviving replicas, it must have been one of Cambiaso’s most popular subjects. An autograph prototype has not, however, been identified. Of the three versions exhibited here, this is the most brisk in handling and confident in its abbreviations. The same swift, spiky hand is evident in other replicas from Cambiaso’s workshop.
