Van Scherpenberg’s work is an extended meditation on painting, landscape, time, material, and femininity. Furo is based on the photo documentation of the artist’s daylong intervention on a beach opposite Rio de Janeiro. She placed a mass of red pigment in a hole on the beach and observed for several hours as the tide came in. The interplay of pigment, sand, and water created a landscape “painting” that engaged in an organic dialogue with the beach’s spectacular surroundings.
